Essay:

In 1963 Stan “Doc” Sheft, along with various partners, opened the first incarnation of Colonial Lanes on Rt.1 in Lawrenceville, NJ. Initially a 32 lane bowling center it was expanded to 64 in the 1970’s and continued as such for almost 40 years. However, in the2000’s the bowling business began to wane. The many loyal leagues provided support but families and young adults were becoming increasingly more interested in traveling outside the area to find their entertainment as the industrial giant Trenton began to shutter many factories. Local businesses suffered without a central location to draw crowds and many did wind up closing. Despite numerous offers, the Sheft family refused to abandon the roots their family had set and, as a result, Colonial Bowling & Entertainment was born.

As a privately owned small business, Colonial Bowling & Entertainment has re-vamped, re-opened and re-invigorated the town of Lawrenceville by becoming the epitome of a modern-age family entertainment center. Now with 24 lanes including a private 4-lane VIP Suite, a state of the art Nexus Laser Tag arena and a 65 game arcade and redemption area we have quickly become a staple of the Central New Jersey community. Our birthday parties offer access to the entire center as well as newly-remodeled private rooms for cake and pizza. With a full-scale bar and grill we cater to everything from kid’s parties to corporate events and our food is second to none! Whether it be for Sunday Football or Blacklight Bowling our 6 consecutive 16.5 ft x 18.5 ft HD projection screens are the most consecutive high-definition projection screens in the country to date and we guarantee you’ll never miss a play. We have drawn comparisons to Lucky Strike, Dave & Buster’s and Chuck E. Cheese among others but there is not a center within 50 miles that can provide the combination of our kid friendly atmosphere with our more adult-oriented nightlife.

Though we are still growing as a business, Colonial Bowling & Entertainment has been, and continues to be, the place to go in the Greater Mercer County area for almost 50 years. By teaming with the town of Lawrenceville and the Mercer County Chamber of Commerce we have created a centralized location for the community to meet, eat, and bowl in a safe, fun, and clean environment. We have provided employment in the area for over 60 people with more being added each day as business continues to boom. Our highly trained customer service professionals, many of whom bowl themselves, are ready, willing, and able to assist with any possible needs. I strongly urge the committee to accept my nomination of our center as not only a pillar of excellence in the industry but also as a display of accomplishment for small businesses across the country that seek to unite and give back to the communities that give them life.
